How do I know if my child is in an abusive relationship? What are the signs?

As parents, many of us may not think that our children will ever find themselves in an abusive relationship.  However, it is possible and, it can happen to anyone.  One in three teens will experience dating violence.  Below are some signs that your teen may be experiencing teen dating violence:

  • Failing grades, changes in academic interest, skipping class

  • Bruises, scratches or other unexplained injuries

  • Avoiding friends, siblings, family members

  • Emotional outbursts

  • Constant worry concerning their dating partner

  • Substance abuse

  • Sudden mood swings or changes in behavior

What can I do?

Talk with your child about healthy relationships and what those look like.
Encourage the dialogue with your teen about dating abuse and/or what they experienced. Encourage the conversation but don't force the conversation.  They will talk when they are ready. Contact your local Coalition Against Domestic Violence or the National Domestic Violence hotline to obtain resources.  If you are a Georgia Resident, you may contact the Atlanta Partnership Against Domestic Violence at 404-873-1766 to speak with a qualified representative who is trained and ready to assist you in creating a safety plan.
